Question: Surely this country is not yet ripe for independence? Asked by a cautious chap whose name is now forgotten.
Answer: Not only is it ripe for the measure, but in danger of rotting for the want of it! Answer from John Witherspoon, signatory to the American Declaration of Independence.
Moral: History remembers the bold.
Witherspooon, incidentally, was a Paisley based church minister and academic head-hunted by colonists in New Jersey to run the college that is now Princeton.
His philosophy and teaching influenced many American patriots. It is said that he only agreed to move to "the colonies" at the age of 45 when his wife overcame her fear of sailing.
Wonder how Scotland's story would have panned out if Mrs Witherspoon had succumbed to her phobia?
