reveals Scottish companies have won just 17 direct contracts associated with the London Olympics in 2012, despite bidding for 2,806. The SNP government has complained that funding for 2012 cost lottery causes in Scotland £150m. It wants the equivalent back for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. London will get considerable improvements to its transport infrastructure and much of the investment is public. But Scotland is being denied a proportionate rise in its block grant - the Barnett Consequentials - even though we have our own Commonwealth Games to fund for 2014. There is even a suggestion that Scottish firms will lose out there too as English companies benefit from the experience of delivering for 2012.
To be honest I am neither surprised nor angry that the contracts are mainly going to London firms. It makes sense. What is annoying is to be constantly told that these are All Britain Games and we all benefit...that somehow we ought to be grateful for ANY crumbs thrown our way.
If only we could secure our own Scottish Olympic team the unfairness of it all might be worth putting up with.
