The news that John Smeaton is to stand for parliament in Glasgow North East left me dismayed. He might well be more articulate that Michael Martin, the former House of Common's speaker who stood down. But Smeaton is no Esther Ranzten. Of course we should get more non-aligned people into politics IF they have something to contribute - Rantzen is a long established campaigner who set up Childline and championed consumers against big business. But what qualifications does the former baggage handler have, beyond being a nice chap who sets aboot terrorists? I enjoyed the Smeatonator jokes and memes and was pleased at the good fortune his 15 minutes of classic telly brought. Now I cannot help but feel he is being exploited and forsee a backlash. If John doesn't watch out, he may soon hit the deck himself.

Hi John
Thanks for taking the time to comment. I totally agree with you about Griffin as you will see elsewhere in the blog. Given that John is representing the anti-politician vote, which is fairly large just now, the BBC are wrong to exclude him. But I continue to fear that he is being exploited here and that, nice bloke as he is, he will not be able to cope with the demands of being a constituency MP.

You know, I disagree with you Joan, John’s always pottering around where I stay and he seems to be the real deal to me.
YOu know that this week the BBC happily displayed the foulest today in Christendom (actually, he’s probably not in Christendom actually) Nick Griffin, the Nazi-loving scumbag chief of the BNP jackboot brigade. They were happy to allow this loathesome pig time on their airwaves spouting his repugnant crap over and over, making half of us sick and bringing more into his campaign of fear and hate.
While up in Scotland, the BBC were denying the candidate John Smeaton the chance to take part in a radio programme about the upcoming By-Election. They said they only wanted to give the four main candidates a chance, well Smeaton is currently third in the polls, so that means he should have been up there too. However, because the BBC only use their airtime to promote fascists and not heros, Smeaton was frozen out.
It doesn’t seem like he’s even being given a decent chance, does it?
