How else can the mayor of London divert attention from the huge amount of national resources being diverted towards the 2012 Olympics, an event from which his city will be the overwhelming beneficiary?
The Westminster government admitted last month that the original cost estimate for the games, £1.5billion, was £500m short. Bizarrely for such a major international project, they failed to take inflation into account. (Imagine the media brohaha if the Scottish Executive had made a similar mistake?)
